| The song is about Ernie's unsuccessful attempts at playing the
saxophone while holding his Rubber Duckie. Throughout the
video, with the help of many highly entertaining characters (puppet
as well as various cameos by celebrities who we will not disclose at
this time...guess you will have to go rent the video), Ernie learns
that he can play the saxophone by momentarily putting down the
duckie. Once he is done playing his instrument, he realizes
that he can pick his duckie up again.
In 1990, when the Village was just starting, a consultant came to
Long Beach and showed this video as an illustration of the
importance of putting down old ways of doing things in order to move
on to newer more exciting ways.
David Pilon, the Director of Training and Consultation for MHA-LA
explains that "Every movement needs an anthem, and this one
fits."
