  • Engagement: The goal of engagement is to build a long term trusting relationship between the outreach worker and the member. The engagement process varies in length of time.
  • Engagement can be described in a few basic phases:

Phase one – Initiating contact.
Phase two – Maintaining contact
Phase three – Bringing it home.

  1. Outreach is the initial and most crucial step in connecting a homeless person to services.
  2. Outreach is directed towards locating homeless individuals who are not otherwise connected with the system.
  3. It’s important to celebrate each success.
  4. Respect where an individual resides.
  5. Respect the individual recovery process.
  6. Have realistic expectations.
  7. Maintain flexibility
  8. Be friendly.
  9. Never promise anything you can’t deliver
  10. Respect a person’s right to refuse services.
  11. Introduce yourself to local businesses.
  12. Be ready to respond immediately.
  13. Empower individuals by presenting options.
  14. Don’t approach someone while their sleeping.
  15. Don’t write up information in front of people.
  16. Travel lightly.
  17. Utilize a cell phone.
  18. Dress comfortably.
