Dual Diagnosis Trainings

Presenters: John Travers and Guyton Colantuono

Title: "The Jedi Master Approach to Dual Diagnosis"

Abstract: This presentation will explore the frequent gaps that occur between the principles we preach and the principles we practice in the dual diagnosis arena. Through the use of vignettes, participants will actively discuss the sources of our "Dark Sides" and identify effective ways to manage these common conflicts in order to "Utilize the Force."

Summary of Presentation:

Working with people diagnosed with dual disorders can present tremendous challenges to "front line" practitioners. The provider’s ability to adhere to his/her values and ideals can often be compromised when working closely with the frustrating and painful issues that the dually diagnosed person presents.

This presentation seeks to identify and articulate ways to manage and overcome the common scenarios that seem to provoke less effective responses in professionals. Attendees will take an active part in reading and discussing vignettes designed to illustrate these pitfalls and our efforts to design appropriate interventions.

Learning Goals Include:

  • Participants will become familiar with several frequent circumstances that create barriers to successful interactions with people who are diagnosed with dual disorders.
  •   Participants will identify a variety of means to be able to more effectively recognize and respond to these problem areas.
  • Participants will be sensitized to certain "red-flag" words and terms that often indicate emotional and value conflicts.
