Workshop Title: The Ethics of Member / Staff
Relationships
Abstract: The psychosocial rehabilitation approach requires staff to
interact with members in ways that typically are either not
addressed or may even be considered harmful by the medical model.
The result is that staff in PSR programs can become confused about
the nature and the boundaries of their relationships with members.
This workshop is designed to help staff understand how ethical and
boundary issues manifest themselves in the PSR environment.
Workshop participants will begin by filling out a 20-question
"Ethical Dilemmas" questionnaire that serves as the basis
of discussion for the rest of the workshop. Using the participants’
questionnaire responses, the workshop will address such issues as
power, exploitation, multiple relationships, self-disclosure,
sexual, physical, and social contact between staff and members, and
the merging of personal and professional lives.
